Since the end of February, I ended up painting nearly 70 miniatures. I'm damn positive that I've never done that in my entire history of painting, at least to a nice level of detail. But, anyway, here is the core of my goblin army:

Neato. I did not multi-base them as I figured (rightly so) that I would have a hard enough time just painting up the mins. And leaving them on separate bases allows me to use them in other games (Kings of War Vanguard, Age of Sigmar, maybe some old Warhammer Fantasy one of these days...).

Lots of goblins, relatively speaking. I have lots more that needs purchased, assembled and painted to get a real army going. Not now, though. This was quite a feat for me. Time for a short break, time to get a few nice pieces of terrain done, work on a gaming table, and perhaps paint up a Necron or two (to see if I can make them work for 40k). Oh, and my Orc team for Blood Bowl. That needs to get done soon, too.Wulf359http://www.blogger.com/profile/08943775999295855906noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3391087432219720899.post-71711706466076599212017-06-27T16:12:00.002-04:002018-04-21T14:52:34.748-04:00Warhammer 40K 8th EditionIt's here. It's great. And I'm back in it. Not quite Age of Sigmar as I'd liked it to have been, but it's still a vast improvement over everything I've seen since 4th edition. Probably won't get many of my mates into it, but I'll start haunting the "local" game stores once I get enough minis done.

Another Horus Heresy plastic model finished! Not as easy to paint as my Ultramarines Captain, but still very good and very satisfying in the end. Still eluding perfection, but, meh, it is a good mini regardless.

I should get better pics when the weather improves.Wulf359http://www.blogger.com/profile/08943775999295855906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3391087432219720899.post-41809156374296685762016-12-14T13:23:00.000-05:002016-12-14T13:28:03.824-05:00Horus Heresy models, yay!Model done of the Ultramarines Captain from the Betrayal at Calth boxed set. Equipped with Cataphractii pattern Terminator armor, wielding a combi-melta and a chainfist, ready to bring down the righteousness of the Emperor about the heads and necks of his traitorous brethren.

What can I say? Oh yeah, this is a top-quality plastic kit, very easy to paint (though in the future, I'll think twice about assembling before painting). Games Workshop, in my opinion, has fully redeemed itself in my eyes and is once again the greatest miniature gaming company in the land. I'm still not sold on the 40k rules system, but Age of Sigmar is a jewel and if GW decided to do their 40k setting with AoS rules, well, I don't have enough money.

But, as for the lore, the Horus Heresy has always been fascinating for me, and I'm sure I echo the views of thousands of 40k fans (or, erm, 30k). While I cannot afford to buy all of their Heresy sets, nor do I have any hope of ever painting all those minis, I am all for picking up the odd model here and there and painting it up just for my own pleasure. And a pleasure it was! Well, if I ignore my own failings when it comes to painting, that is. This was a test bed for some new(ish) painting techniques, and while I didn't nail it, I think I will get the hang of it eventually if I can stay focused and not lose patience.

This isn't the best pain job, and it is far from perfect (the camera revealed some mistakes my eyeball missed). I don't have the Ultramarines transfers for this model, but I might scrape up some older ones and see if I can make them work. But, it's done, I like it (especially the choice of colors--Caledor Sky for the armor, Mephiston Red for the cloak, and Sycorax Bronze for the trim).

Still plugging away at undead, will have another unit ready by Christmas for this blog. I also had plans to assemble and paint up the Greigor Fell Hand model from the Burning of Prospero set (another HH product from GW), but I didn't have the correct paints so I doubt it gets done by Christmas, but he's coming and I hope he ends up looking as good as this model, hopefully much better! There is also the issue of my Achilles tank for GF9 Tanks! (see the Firefly entry earlier), but I mis-assembled part of the kit, and wasn't able to get a new one in time to get it done for Christmas. But, I'm confident that I'll get that one done as well....and maybe even some new All Quiet on the Martian front models (US tanks and heavy infantry).Wulf359http://www.blogger.com/profile/08943775999295855906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3391087432219720899.post-42917933055260161882016-11-16T11:11:00.003-05:002016-11-16T11:11:51.159-05:00The Return of the Ethereal Legion (Mantic Kings of War)

My newest attempt at a ghostly host. The previous one was a more vibrant green color, and I liked it, but it is hard to replicate for large number of minis. So, I went with an easier, more bluish color. White base washed with a couple coat of Nihilakh Oxide, followed by a light drybrush of white again.

Hopefully I can keep it up and get the army finished. It only took me two months to get this bit done....sigh.
Wulf359http://www.blogger.com/profile/08943775999295855906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3391087432219720899.post-9250743325318433402016-11-10T18:03:00.001-05:002018-04-23T13:01:52.063-04:00Tanks! Well, I recall posting earlier about liking what I was seeing about the newest edition of WHFB coming out. It's been out for a couple of weeks now, have played it a bit, gone over the rules, such as they are, and I'm fully convinced that this is a fun game to play. So, I'm in. Luckily, with the rules being FREE, and me having a large bitz box of old miniatures, I am able to get an army together that costs me nothing at this time. So, fun...cheap...that's a win for me.

I have been working on Dark Elves, which are now part of the Order Faction, and called aelfs. But, earlier this week I decided to take a small break from them and paint up a chaos lord:

Borak the Despoiler, Lord of Chaos. And yes, it's that Borak, for those that get it.

Can't say it's my best miniature I've done, and my green-stuff skills are very lacking, but I like the pose and the look. Very threatening. And, since he's based off of the Archaon on foot miniature (rare mini indeed), he's as big as an ogre...or, I mean, ogor. Very chaos-like, as his size and power make him the chaos lord he deserves to be. Now to just get an army around him. After Dark Elves and some Lizardmen (called seraphon, also in the Order faction). Gencon this year is going to be expensive. I'll post pics of the aelfs and seraphon after I'm done with their armies.

Looking forward to more material from this game. Very enjoyable. Rules are light but easy and fast--more tactical depth than I thought there would be. There are haters, of course, but that doesn't stop the rest of us from enjoying this nice product. Meh, whatever. If a game is fun, it's a good game. And that's what Age of Sigmar is.Wulf359http://www.blogger.com/profile/08943775999295855906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3391087432219720899.post-91759056160439981002015-06-30T17:34:00.004-04:002015-06-30T17:34:53.554-04:00Weak Willed, but Itching to Paint Something.....

I don't think I'm going to get back into Warmachine and Hordes, but one never knows. And with the excitement about Warhammer: Age of Sigmar (which, admittedly, is starting to look good--but we'll see if it delivers), I've had a bit of an itch to paint up some bigger models. So here's the first of Butcher's new battlegroup, Bruticus:

Army Painter spray primers are a gift from the gods! Worth every penny. Also broke out some of my old P3 paints to supplement my excellent line of Reaper Pro series. Or is it Master's series? Which ever one they don't make anymore... I also am going to print up some Khador specific decals and apply them at a later date. So while this is finished, it actually isn't. Huh?

Anyway, this is a good model. The plastic/resin isn't the best on the market, and doesn't clean up very well (mold lines and miscasts and such) but it painted just fine. Took me a while, no surprise there, but the end result is very satisfying. I have another Juggernaut to paint up, and then a Marauder. After that, I'll probably strip and repaint Butcher. All in time for Gencon--that's the plan at least. And that will be all for Khador, as if I start playing again, I will only play small battles (preferably Tooth and Claw and Mangled Metal only).

I am also looking into doing a battlegroup for Scavernous (a Cryx warcaster). That'll probably take shape after Gencon, if it does at all.Wulf359http://www.blogger.com/profile/08943775999295855906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3391087432219720899.post-51567975023645778532015-03-19T13:29:00.002-04:002015-03-19T13:30:19.504-04:00Indiegogo Campaign6mm Scale Armies - Wave 4
Spray white, two coats of Didi's Magic Ink Green, a heavy drybrush of Reaper Pro Paint Pine (or Emerald...I can't remember and it was just last night!)/Leather White (Pro Paints are no longer available. Followed by a lighter drybrush of Leather White with a touch of whichever green mixed in. They I lightly used Didi's Magic Ink Red for the eye sockets. The bases aren't my best work, but they'll do.
1860 Spencer Repeater Carbine from ARMI Sport. Named "Nancy" in honor of the person who talked me into getting it (my wife's wonderful aunt). Some might recognize it as the weapon carried by Christian Bale's character in the 3:10 to Yuma movie remake (a damned good western and I recommend it). Had it for a while, but looked up and saw it just now and can't get over how nice of a weapon it is. I should go out and shoot it some more, but it's awfully hot and humid right now...
All Quiet On The Martian Front is a 15mm(ish) scale tabletop wargame set in an alternate history during an actual Martian invasion of Earth at the start of the 20th century. Has some good background to read, the models are amazing (amazing, I'll say it again), and the rules are good enough.

What's posted below is my first model from the line, a Martian Assault Tripod, the most common of the invading war machines. Very simple paint scheme. Use of spray paints for the most part.

I had quite a bit of the last couple of days. That's good, because I didn't have much skill, or eyesight, but my little project turned out ok I think:

And here was the original prototype that I'm not sure if I'm doing anything else with:

Ugly little squat bugger. He was a test run, and he was successful. Any fightas (sans bomma) I do will be based off of him.

So, yeah, anyway, that's done, and before the Yule! I plan on doing 3 more of them, then one 'Eavy Bomma. or two, if I have the material. All will be used in my Micro Fight Tank Wars! rules (real name pending), and of course, Epic Armageddon if I play it ever again.

Have no real idea how to paint it. My original Orks were red, but I'm favoring red for Chaos, so...I might paint them up as Bad Moon Orks, which means lots of yellow. I have never painted miniatures with yellow as the primary color. I'm not confident that it will turn out good. But that's not something I'm going to worry about for a week or so.

Here are two stands (referred to as Warbands in my evolving set of fantasy rules), one of Wood Elves and the other of Beastkin. Both are available from Microworld Games (http://www.microworldgames.com/). They have good products and services.

My eyesight at short range is just about shot, and I do use reading glasses. Oh well, old age and all that stuff. I painted the beasts first, and though I like the colors, I'm not too happy with the detail. The wood elves came next, and though I think I managed a bit of better detailing, I'm not happy with the paintjob in general. But they work, and at that small of a scale, quibbling over details is foolish. I have five warbands of each done.

Please note that at this time I should be painting the three Khador 'Jacks that I got at an incredibly stupid cheap price (ebay is my friend at times)....I just can't get my mind right to sit down and suffer through that ordeal at this moment.

Here's what that progress looks like so far:

Not too bad so far, but I'm keeping it as simple as possible (like, four colors max, and no fancy, unrealistic but pretty highlighting and stuff, and no battle damage or weathering). This is as far as I've gotten in the last three weeks, and it doesn't look like I'm going to get much more of it done before Yule. Sigh, I'll give another it a try next week.

As always, please accept my apologies at not being a very good photographer. Sometimes I use my camera phone, other times I use my pocket camera. All times the quality is hit and miss.

Finally, I have a few other projects I'm working on. Two are my own rules for 6mm fantasy table top battles and 6mm sci-fi table top battles. They will be easy, quick-play rules (similar to the old DBA rules), but be very competitive and very customizable. I also have a starship combat game I'm working on, but I need to get the other two done first before I can work on that again, as I want all three to have a similar set of base rules mechanics. Which we've been referring to around here as the "surge" system. Eventually I will post all of these rules on this blog.

In addition, I have my set of house-rules for Basic Dungeons and Dragons finished (1983 Red Box by Frank Mentzer--generally agreed as the best edition of D&D). I'll post those up sometime once I tidy them up and edit out the errors. It keeps the same gameplay, all I did was add in some extras and changed some things to fit better for campaigns I run in the present and future. Thanks to Katie Allison, Zach Riley, Jack Remsen, and Emily Schildmeier for helping with the play-testing of these house rules (and I'm sorta sorry about all of those giant spiders and tiny little creepy animated evil wooden dolls).

Oh, and just because:

Hot bridesmaids and handsome groomsmen complimenting the beautiful wife and her very, very, VERY lucky husband. The wedding was great, and I can't remember being happier than I am now.

Yuletide begins on the 21st, so I'll officially be celebrating in my own heathen way starting then (which reminds me, I have to find some mead before I start). Have a Festive Yule, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to all of you!Wulf359http://www.blogger.com/profile/08943775999295855906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3391087432219720899.post-21320981000646861712013-10-27T18:16:00.002-04:002013-12-12T13:59:49.341-05:00Wedding...Got hitched yesterday, no pics...yet. I am the luckiest guy on the planet to have met Katie. She puts up with way more crap from me than she should have too.

Also...

Soon, so very soon. My Kickstarter stuff should be here. Myth, Robotech, and Rivet Wars. Rivet Wars should have been here last month, but CMON isn't known for reliability. But, I'll get the stuff.Wulf359http://www.blogger.com/profile/08943775999295855906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3391087432219720899.post-81157167795836753212013-09-13T17:51:00.002-04:002015-02-03T13:12:46.037-05:00Think it's about time to post something again...

Farrow Bone Grinders. Good minis, solid paint job. I have a full unit of them ready to go. I have plenty of Farrow models waiting to be painted and used in a fair sized army, so if I ever play Warmachine/Hordes again, I should have a fresh army to use. However...

I have neglected this blog for too long now, and I apologize. I just haven't had the burning desire to paint and be creative. Plus, my eyesight has gone a bit, it's hard to see close up now to paint (reading glasses for the win--I guess). Anyway, I am going to expand this blog in the near future. It's going to encompass all aspects of my gaming hobby; not just painting, but role-playing and board-gaming. Plus I will use it to post house rules for games, and given time, my own rules for miniatures games.

Hope this happens sooner than later. I do have a wedding coming up! And that's taking a large chunk of my attention at this time.
I was inspired by this: http://sanguinesons.blogspot.com/2010/12/medusa-conversion-1.html

Mine:

A Traitor Legion Medusa conversion (can also work as any spg for Imperial Guard). Using an old unused Basilisk model I had. I have soft spot for turretless tank destroyer type vehicles (thank you World of Tanks).

Main differences is I don't have as much bits to draw from, my plasticard skills are poor at best, and the originator of the original conversion I am copying seems to have a better grasp of what he is doing. Anyway, I'll be working on the rivets next, if it doesn't kill me. Then I'll add some more bits, clean it up, attempt to paint it, and then either sell it, display it, or build a traitor legion around it (and two more Medusae, plus at least three Chimera...and some Sentinels...oh that's a lot of work). If I do the latter, I might as well play me some 40K, which doesn't sound appealing at the moment.Wulf359http://www.blogger.com/profile/08943775999295855906noreply@blogger.com0
